Tel Aviv Restaurant Review: Cafe Nimrod

Even though it’s October and officially Fall, here in Tel Aviv you wouldn’t know it. The weather has stayed consistently sunny and in the mid to high 80s, and people are still spending their days at the beach. The first rain of the season is predicted this week though, and I’m ecstatic since I love rainy days.

 

This week, we took advantage of the sunny weather and Ofir’s time off of work to visit the Namal (Tel Aviv Port). The port is one of my favorite places in Tel Aviv. With its shops and restaurants along the boardwalk, it’s always buzzing with activity. There’s usually some fun events going on outside there, and I always love visiting the Indoor Port Market. The Namal was packed because of the holidays, of course, but we were determined to get breakfast, so we headed down the boardwalk to Cafe Nimrod.

I had never been to Cafe Nimrod before, but Ofir had, and he told me a little bit about the background (which you can read on their website here or on the menu at the restaurant). The cafe was established in memory of a young man named Nimrod Segev who was killed in the Second Lebanon War.  The story choked me up of course, especially because the menu includes a poem written by Nimrod found in a notebook left behind in his bag. The cafe specializes in food common in the Galilee region of Northern Israel, where the owners are from, and it also includes a corner dedicated to informational materials about visiting Galilee.

We immediately knew we wanted “Nimrod’s Famous Country Indulgence” breakfast after we saw it served to the table next to us. The breakfast requires at least two diners, and it’s a little pricey for breakfast at 61 shekels per person, but it’s well worth it for what you get. It includes eggs any style for each diner (I got an egg white omelet with herbs), Galilean cheese and dips (like tahini, goat cheese, tuna salad, dil yogurt dip, eggplant dip, jam, Nutella, and many more), olives, a bread platter with rolls, pastries and chocolate croissants, personal sized yogurt topped with granola (they came in shot glasses and were adorable), Israeli salad, and a hot and cold drink for each person.

The food came out quickly and tasted as good as it looked.  I was full so quickly and mad at myself for it, but I tried to eat as much of all the amazing options as I could. Since we were outside on the front deck with an ocean view, we relaxed there for a while and kept slowly eating a little more and more. Of course the Nutella didn’t go to waste. When I first moved to Israel, I thought it was so weird to eat things like salad and tuna for breakfast, but now I honestly prefer it to an American style breakfast. There’s something about cold chopped fresh vegetables when it’s hot out that’s super satisfying.

There are a lot of great breakfast places in Tel Aviv, but I was very impressed by Cafe Nimrod. I definitely want to return to try some of their lunch and dinner options (like their famous mushroom falafel) and to have breakfast again. I think it will be a great place to bring visitors so they can get the full Israeli breakfast experience complete with a view of the Mediterranean and the bustling port. Because of the prices, it may not be an everyday option, but it’s perfect for a special weekend brunch. The story behind the cafe is really touching, and I think it really adds something to the experience to know that the place is honoring the legacy of such a special man. If you’re visiting Tel Aviv or just looking for a new breakfast place, I really recommend it.
